You can exchange currency upon arrival at the airport in Accra. The currency of Ghana is the cedi (pronounced "seedy"). The word cedi derives from the Akan word for the cowrie shell, widely used for currency long ago. The cedi is prefixed GHS or by the ₵ symbol. Cedis can only be obtained in Ghana. They cannot be converted anywhere except in Ghana and neighboring countries.
Ghana is a cash society. ATMs are sprouting everywhere in the cities and work with international networks. Larger denomination bills (50 and over) fetch a better cash exchange rate. Credit cards, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express can be used at hotels, upscale locations, and a couple of larger coastal cities, but they are primarily useless outside these locations. They are more likely to work in an ATM.
It is essential to break large bills into smaller denominations to shop in the markets and visit villages. You can better bargain with market vendors with small bills; they're also handy for public transportation. Be sure to notify your debit or credit card issuer of your travel dates and that you may be using the card outside the country of issue. Otherwise, attempts to use your card may be denied.

In Ghana, they use power sockets (outlets) of type D and G. In the United States, you have plugs A and B. You need a power plug adapter in Ghana for sockets type D and G. The plugs of your electric devices don't fit without.

You need to look for a power plug adapter for sockets type D and type G. Alternatively, choose a world travel adapter that fits multiple sockets, in case you travel more often. Because you need a voltage converter as well (see below), you might want to use a combined travel adapter/voltage converter.
Voltage converter needed in Ghana?
The standard voltage in Ghana (230 V) is much higher than the voltage level your devices typically operate at in the United States (120 V). Without a converter, you risk serious damage to your devices. Additionally, be aware that the frequency in Ghana differs.
A voltage converter will ensure a safe input voltage level for your devices in Ghana. You can find voltage converters at Amazon. Because you also need a power plug adapter, you might want a combined plug adapter/voltage converter.
Be warned if your converter cannot change the frequency. It is not advisable to use your devices. But if you do (at your own risk), exercise special caution with motorized devices and those containing electronic chips, such as clocks, shavers, and medical devices.
To be sure, check the label on your devices. Some devices never need a converter. If the label states 'INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz' the device can be used in every country in the world. This is common for devices with chargers like tablets/laptops, photo cameras, cell phones, toothbrushes, etc. For these devices you will only need a power plug adapter.
A visit to the small local village of Simiw to spend some time with the villagers and bless them with donations is a great way to end the travel experience.
School supplies
General school supplies are always needed – they include pencils and pencil sharpeners, rulers, erasers, solar calculators, and chalk. Other popular supplies include English–Swahili dictionaries, world maps, and even age-appropriate storybooks in English.
First aid and health
Bandages/plasters, antibiotic ointment, toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste, dental floss, soap, hand sanitizer, and feminine care products (like sanitary napkins) will be used and appreciated.

New or gently used children’s and adult clothing is always well received. Undergarments are always needed, and especially bras.

Ghana's climate is tropical primarily due to its location on the equator. Humidity levels are constantly high, and temperatures range between 70°F and 90°F. The rainy seasons extend from April to July (heavy rains) and from September to November (light rains).
The southern part of the country is humid most of the year, but the north can be arid.
It is the coolest from May until October. In December, the harmattan, a dry, dusty wind from the Sahara, covers the country and lasts through February. The desert wind reduces humidity, and early mornings and nights are relatively calm. Visibility during the harmattan can be poor, as the air is filled with fine dust.
GHANA - The official language of Ghana is English. There are movements to make several local languages official as well. The Twi dialect of Akan is the language most commonly used on a daily basis to communicate between ethnic groups. Most Ghanaians are at least bilingual. English (official), African languages (including Akan, Moshi-Dagomba, Ewe, and Ga)
Almost everywhere in West Africa you have to be very careful with taking pictures of the local people. It is not appreciated at all when you take a spontaneous picture of somebody. Taking pictures of children is normally not a problem at all. They normally love to be in front of the camera, especially when you can show them the picture with a digital camera.
If you want to photograph an adult though, you should at least ask it before you do so, and even then you should be prepared on receiving "No" as an answer or being asked for money for a picture. Permission should always be sought before photographing military installations, government buildings or airports.
Traditional values still prevail for many locals in Ghana, and showing excess flesh is not appreciated unless at your hotel or resort by the pool.

This Trip Is Non-Refundable
Cancellations must be received by email. Cancellation made 60 days prior to the date of departure, a travel credit will be issued to the individual traveler. Cancellation fees will apply: initial deposit, booking fees, donations, late fees, reinstatement and any additional fees as stated on the specific registration. Other nonrefundable fees may be incurred from, and not limited to, the Hotel, Airline, Ground Transportation, and other service providers which override TBOG Travel's cancellation policy and can be up to 100% of the cost of the booking, regardless of whether travel has commenced. Cancellations made within 61 days of the departure date are non-refundable and not eligible to obtain a travel credit.
If a reservation is cancelled by TBOG Travel prior to commencement of the trip, TBOG Travel shall have no responsibility beyond the issuance of credit for the monies paid related to the trip that was canceled by TBOG Travel without offset for cancellation fees imposed by TBOG Travel or third-party vendors. Example: Reservations in arrears 91 days will cancel automatically for non-payment. Any monies paid will be forfeited and not refunded. Where TBOG Travel incurs any liability for a cancellation fee or charge for any booking which you cancel, you agree to indemnify us for that fee or charge.
Travel Credits can be used to purchase other specific TBOG Tour the World Travel Experiences.
Travel credits issued from travel booked:
For 2024 travel will be valid through and must be used for travel before December 31, 2025
For 2025 travel, will be valid through and must be used for travel before December 31, 2026.
For 2026 travel, will be valid through and must be used for travel before December 31, 2027.
If you choose a TBOG Tour the World Travel Experience that is more than your travel credit, you are responsible for any additional cost. If the new Travel Experience is less than the travel credit, a future travel credit will be issued for the difference.
TBOG Travel reserves the right to restrict any changes to a reservation. All changes are subject to availability. Please note that changes made to overall party size, date, or location may result in a change to the rate. For your peace of mind, we recommend the purchase of travel insurance, we have partnered with Travel Guard to offer travel insurance protection. Travel Guard insurance policies are underwritten by AIG.

Ghana 
We will then continue on to visit AKOSOMBO DAM & ADOMI BRIDGE. The Dam is an incredible feat of engineering originally built to provide electricity for the aluminum industry. The idea for the hydroelectric dam was conceived as long ago as 1915 but plans weren’t drawn up until the 1940s. The dam was finally built between 1961 and 1965. It now supplies 70% of Ghana’s electricity needs and also exports power to Togo and Benin. The structure is massive! It is 660 meters long, 114 meters high, and, at its base, 366 meters wide.

Return to he Mission of the African Diaspora Forum to discuss and share your experience with Her Excellency, Dr. Erieka Bennett, the Ambassador and Founder of the Mission. A short ceremony will take place at the Sankofa Wall before leaving the Mission.
